Obedience – Obedience God Desires (365/65)

Is it possible to be active in God’s work and yet miss what God actually asked us to do?
In 1 Samuel 15, the Lord had commanded King Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites. Instead, Saul chose partial obedience. He spared the king and kept the best of the livestock. When the prophet Samuel confronted him, Saul defended himself by saying the animals were kept to offer as sacrifices to the Lord. But God was not impressed by the appearance of devotion. Through Samuel came this piercing truth: Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22, NKJV)
Saul tried to replace obedience with religious activity. Yet God values a surrendered heart far more than outward offerings. In His sight, rebellion is serious, and stubbornness can quietly become idolatry.
The warning is just as relevant for us today. We may serve faithfully, give generously, and engage in many spiritual activities. Yet the Lord is not seeking impressive acts as much as He desires willing obedience to His voice.
True worship begins with a surrendered heart. As David later wrote, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart” (Psalm 51:17). And Paul urges believers to present their lives as “a living sacrifice” to God (Romans 12:1).
Pause and Ponder
What does this passage reveal about what God truly values in His people?
Are there areas where you may be substituting activity for obedience to God’s voice?
Whom could your quiet obedience encourage to trust and follow the Lord more faithfully?
The greatest offering we can bring to God is not what we do for Him, but a heart that simply obeys Him.

Lord, help me to obey Your voice above my own plans, Amen.
