Boundaries – Boundaries that Keep You on the Wall (365/197)

Have you ever been sure God called you to something, only to face voices that mock, distract, or even sound spiritual while pulling you away?
“I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” (Nehemiah 6:3)
Nehemiah recognised that God had called him to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and knew it was more than a construction project - it was God’s work. He refused to be distracted even in the face of opposition, which came quickly. Sanballat and Tobiah mocked the builders (Nehemiah 4:1–6), threatened them (4:7–9), spread false accusations (6:5–9), and even used a deceptive prophetic message to lure Nehemiah into compromise (6:10–13). His response was prayer coupled with practical wisdom.
He prayed when threatened, organized guards when danger increased, and had God given discernment to refuse repeated invitations to leave the work. He recognised that not every invitation deserved a response nor every voice deserved trust.
God not only gives us assignments; He gives us wisdom to guard them against distraction, manipulation, and foolishness.
Jesus was never controlled by the demands, expectations, or opposition of others. He steadfastly set His face toward Jerusalem, knowing the Father's will (Luke 9:51) and nothing could divert Him from the cross.
Pause and Ponder
What distraction or demand is currently pulling you away from something God has entrusted to you?
Whose voice has been shaping your decisions more than God's Word?
Where do you need the wisdom to establish a loving but firm boundary?
May we learn to pray, discern, and sometimes simply say, “I cannot come down.”
Wise God, give me discernment to recognize distractions and the courage to stay on the wall, faithfully guarding what You have called me to build, knowing that what You consider worth building is worth guarding. Amen.
