Audio - Renewed Through Humble Obedience

Have you ever struggled with doing things God’s way—especially when it feels too simple, too uncomfortable, or even beneath you? Are you holding back because obedience feels costly to your pride?

The Bible in 2 Kings 5 tells us that Naaman, a mighty warrior, a man of influence and honour, carried beneath his success the painful reality of leprosy, a disease no power or prestige could cure. The unexpected voice of a young captive servant girl leads him to Israel. Naaman arrives in Israel expecting a dramatic healing encounter. When the prophet Elisha sends a simple instruction through a messenger to wash in the Jordan River seven times, Naaman is offended and disappointed. The command felt too ordinary—too undignified for a man of his stature. But urged by his servants, he chooses to humble himself and dips in the muddy Jordan. And there, God meets him. “His flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (v14) causing Naaman to testify to the true God of Israel (v15).

Jesus calls us not to impressive acts, but to simply humble ourselves before Him and He will lift us up (James 4:6-10). In Him, true renewal begins when pride is laid down and trust is lived out in obedience.

Pause and Ponder

  • What does Naaman’s journey reveal about the role of humility in experiencing God’s renewal?

  • Where might my pride be resisting God’s simple instructions in my life today?

  • Whom can I encourage to trust God, even when His way feels difficult or humbling?

God’s renewal begins where pride ends. As we humble ourselves in Christ, obedience becomes the pathway to renewal.

Lord, I confess that pride often stands in the way of my obedience. Renew my heart. Teach me to humbly trust You. Amen.
