Loyalty – When Loyalties Collide (365/226)
What happens when loyalty to God conflicts with the demands of those around us? When our faithfulness is tested, eventually circumstances demand a choice: whose authority comes first?
“We must obey God rather than human beings!” (Acts 5:29)
In 1 Kings 18, we meet Obadiah, who was in charge of Ahab’s household and yet “feared the LORD greatly.” (v3) When Jezebel was killing the prophets, Obadiah had hidden a hundred of them in caves and provided them with food and water (v 3–4). But his position put him in a difficult tension - serving an earthly king while remaining faithful to the King of kings.
When Elijah told Obadiah to announce his presence to Ahab, he was afraid. Elijah had disappeared before, and Obadiah feared that if he did so again, Ahab would kill him (v 9–14). Yet when Elijah assured him he would appear before the king, Obadiah went and delivered the message (v 15–16). Obadiah reminds us that our ultimate loyalty cannot be divided; our highest allegiance belongs to God.
Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Jesus perfectly embodied this undivided loyalty. He came not to do His own will, but the will of the Father who sent Him (John 6:38). His obedience led Him all the way to the cross (Philippians 2:5–8).
Pause and Ponder
Am I putting God first in every area of my life?
What is God asking me to bring into the light?
When loyalties conflict, whose voice do I follow?
Whatever our circumstances, true loyalty is choosing God’s will above every competing allegiance.
Lord, You alone deserve my highest allegiance. Give me wisdom to stand for what is right and grace to obey and serve You faithfully when loyalties collide. Amen.
