Loyalty – Loyalty Without Self-Interest (365/230)
Motives are revealed when there is nothing to gain. Would you still help if no one noticed or remain committed without recognition, reward or return?
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” (Colossians 3:23)
The Bible says in 2 Samuel 17 that when David fled Jerusalem during Absalom’s rebellion, recognizing the need of David and his exhausted men, Barzillai came to his aid, bringing food, supplies and provisions (v27–29). Eighty year old Barzillai was wealthy and he gave generously when David was powerless to reward him. Later, when David offered him a place of honour in Jerusalem, Barzillai declined. He asked instead that his son Chimham go with the king (2 Samuel 19:31–39). He had not served David in order to secure a position. His loyalty was genuine because it expected nothing in return.
God’s love is steadfast and self-giving; He does not love us because we can add to His glory or repay His kindness. In Christ, we see love poured out for people who could offer Him nothing in return (Romans 5:6–8). When our loyalty is rooted in Christ, we can serve without applause, give without repayment and remain faithful without recognition.
Pause and Ponder
Do I remain loyal when there is no recognition or personal benefit?
Have I confused serving others with being valued or appreciated by them?
What could I do today simply because it is loving and right, without expecting anything in return?
As followers of Christ, we reflect His self-giving love by remaining loyal even when there is nothing to gain.
Lord, help me be loyal to You and those You place in my life. May I love, serve and remain faithful without seeking recognition or reward. Amen.
