Audio - When You Have Been Deeply Wronged

Some hurts linger long after the moment has passed; betrayal, harsh words, broken trust or unfair treatment can stir the same anger years later.

Joseph knew what it meant to be deeply wronged. The Bible tells us that his brothers had hated him, thrown him into a pit and sold him into slavery. Years later, when their father died, they feared Joseph would finally take revenge (Genesis 50:15–18).

But Joseph's response is astonishing:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)

Joseph did not pretend the harm had not happened. He knew exactly what his brothers had done. But he refused to let their wrongdoing write the final chapter of his story. Instead of replaying the injustice and waiting to settle the score, Joseph chose to see his story through the larger purposes of God. What his brothers intended for harm, God had used to preserve lives (Genesis 50:19–21). Joseph chose to become an instrument of God's grace.

Because Christ has forgiven us at the cross (Ephesians 4:32), we can learn to extend mercy to others. Forgiveness may not erase our hurt, but it frees us to release revenge and entrust justice to God (Romans 12:19–21).

Pause and Ponder

  • What old hurt do I keep replaying, allowing it to fuel my anger?

  • Am I seeking God’s healing, or still holding on to the desire to make the other person pay?

  • What would it look like to release this person to God while maintaining wise boundaries?

Forgiveness doesn’t deny the hurt; it refuses to let the wound dictate what we do next.

Lord Jesus, You have forgiven me more than I can comprehend. Help me release the hurts I have carried, surrender my desire for revenge, and trust You with justice. Amen.
