Hope – Hope Rekindled by the Risen Christ (365/90)

When hope feels lost and life doesn’t go the way you expected, how do you hold on to faith when God’s plan looks different from yours?
In Luke 24:19–27, two disciples walk the road to Emmaus, their hearts weighed down with grief. They had placed their hope in Jesus, but His crucifixion appeared to end it all. Their honest words, “We were hoping…” (v.21), reveal the depth of their disappointment and confusion.
As they walk, the risen Jesus draws near, though they do not recognize Him. He listens to their story and then opens the Scriptures, showing that the Messiah’s suffering was always part of God’s redemptive plan. As understanding dawns, their hearts are rekindled with hope in Christ. They immediately rise and return to Jerusalem to testify that the Lord is risen indeed.
Encounter with Christ transforms everything. Their response reflects a restored and living hope—“a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3, NKJV). Hope is no longer tied to what they had expected, but to the reality of the risen Christ standing before them. What once seemed like loss is now understood in light of God’s fulfilled promise. Their grief turns to joy, and their hesitation turns to bold witness, not because their circumstances changed, but because their eyes were opened to who Jesus truly is.
Pause and Ponder
What does this passage reveal about Jesus’ presence in times of disappointment?
Where am I holding onto unmet expectations instead of trusting God’s redemptive plan?
Whom can I encourage this week and point them to the living hope found in Christ?

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see You at work even when I do not understand my circumstances. Rekindle my heart through Your Word and anchor my hope in Your resurrection. Amen.
