Audio - Busy for Jesus or With Jesus?

Have we become so busy serving Jesus that we have forgotten to spend time with Jesus?

In Luke 10, we see that while Martha busied herself with preparations, Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to His teaching (v39). When Martha complained, Jesus gently replied, “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (v42). Mary later demonstrated this same devotion by pouring expensive perfume on Jesus' feet and wiping them with her hair (John 12:3). Some saw it as a colossal waste; Jesus saw worship. Mary's service flowed from love and intimacy with her Lord.

The church in Ephesus presents a sobering contrast. Jesus commended their hard work, perseverance, and doctrinal faithfulness (Revelation 2:2–3). They were busy, steadfast, and discerning. Yet one thing was missing: “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love” (v4). Their service had become disconnected from affection for Christ.

Jesus modeled perfect devotion. He often withdrew to be with His Father (Mark 1:35) and His ministry flowed out of that intimate communion with the Father.

God desires our hearts. He is seeking worshippers rather than just workers. Even the simplest act becomes beautiful when it flows from devotion to Him.

Pause and Ponder

  • Has my service for God begun to replace my time with God?

  • What practices help me cultivate love and delight in Christ rather than mere religious activity?

  • If Jesus evaluated my heart today, would He find duty, devotion, or both?

Christian life is not measured by how much we do for God but by how deeply we love Him.

Lord Jesus, draw me back to Your feet and renew my first love, so that everything I do may flow from devotion to You. Amen.
