Righteousness – Beyond Self-Righteousness (365/174)

We naturally compare ourselves with others, often to feel more righteous than we are. But God's standard is never the person beside us - it is His perfect holiness.
"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:14)
In Luke 18, Jesus illustrated this truth through the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (v9-14). The Pharisee stood confidently before God, recounted his religious achievements and thanked God that he was not like others. The tax collector on the other hand, standing at a distance, unwilling even to lift his eyes toward heaven, he beat his chest and prayed, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" (v13). He had no list of accomplishments, excuses, or comparisons. He simply cast himself upon the mercy of God. Jesus' conclusion is breathtakingly comforting: it was the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who went home justified.
At the cross, Jesus took our sin so that we might receive His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). We do not stand before God because we are better than others, but because Christ has been gracious to us.
While the proud seek to establish their own righteousness, God freely gives His righteousness to those who acknowledge their need of Him.
Pause and Ponder
Am I measuring my spiritual life by comparing myself with others or by God's holiness?
Is there any area where pride is keeping me from honestly acknowledging my need of God's grace?
What would it look like today to approach God with the humility of the tax collector?
May we never rely on our own righteousness but always find our confidence in the grace of God through Christ.
Gracious Father, keep me from pride and self-reliance. Give me a humble heart that depends completely on Your mercy. Amen.
