Audio - Zeal for Truth

J. C. Ryle describes zeal in Christianity as ‘a burning desire to please God, to do His will, and to advance His glory in the world in every possible way.’

Wholehearted love for God is revealed not in moments of comfort, but in the courage to remain faithful even when standing alone.

"As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what the LORD tells me." (1 Kings 22:14)

King Ahab surrounded himself with four hundred prophets who enthusiastically affirmed what his itching ears wanted to hear. Speaking to please the king rather than proclaim the word of the Lord, their confidence masked compromise. In contrast, stood Micaiah - alone but burning with zeal for the Lord. He refused to exchange God’s truth for human approval, even when threatened with imprisonment. His zeal flowed from a heart captivated by God.

Jesus who is "the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6) spoke only what the Father gave Him to say, bore witness to the truth before Pilate, and remained obedient even to the cross.

God cannot lie or contradict Himself. Therefore we as His servants must also remain faithful to His voice rather than the voices of the crowd.

Pause and Ponder

  • Am I seeking God's approval more than the acceptance of others?

  • Where am I tempted to remain silent rather than faithfully speak God's truth?

  • What would it look like for my zeal for God to be shaped by truth instead of public opinion?

Wholehearted zeal is not measured by the loudness of our convictions but by the faithfulness of our obedience.

Father, fill me with zeal for You that gives me courage to stand with humility, speak with grace, and follow Christ faithfully, even when I must stand alone. Amen.
