Hospitality – Hospitality Partners in God's Work (365/216)
Could hospitality make us partners in something much bigger than ourselves? Gaius shows us how an open door can become part of God’s mission.
“Therefore, we ought to support such people, so that we can be coworkers with the truth.” (3 John 8)
In 3 John, John commends Gaius for welcoming believers he did not know - travelling workers who had gone out “for the sake of the Name” (v 5-6). He supported them “in a manner worthy of God,” enabling their work to continue. John makes the significance clear: such hospitality makes us “coworkers with the truth” (v. 8). Gaius became a gospel partner by opening his home and supporting those carrying the gospel beyond his community. His hospitality became a ministry.
Ministry is not limited to pulpits or mission fields. A meal, a room, a journey supported or a practical need met can strengthen another’s calling and help God’s work continue.
Jesus gave Himself to bring us into God’s kingdom (Mark 10:45). Having been welcomed into God’s household through Christ (Ephesians 2:13, 19), we can use what He has entrusted to us to welcome and strengthen others (1 Peter 4:10).
God is faithful to His purposes and invites us to participate. May our homes and open doors become doorways into His mission.
Pause and Ponder
How could my home, time or resources support God's work beyond my immediate circle?
Whom might God be inviting me to welcome or encourage in their service?
Am I willing to see practical hospitality as genuine ministry?
Your open door may reach further than you realise.
Faithful God, make me a willing coworker in Your work. Enable me to make my home, time and resources available to strengthen those who serve You. Amen.
