Faithful Friendship – Secure Friendship Celebrates Another (365/218)
Have you ever watched a friend receive something you secretly wished were yours - a promotion, an opportunity, recognition, or influence? You want to celebrate, but comparison whispers, What about me?
“Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.” (1 Samuel 18:1)
The Bible, in 1 Samuel 18 records the friendship between David and Jonathan. As Saul’s son, Jonathan was heir to the throne, while David’s growing prominence pointed toward a very different future. Jonathan had every reason to resent David and see him as a rival. Yet Jonathan did not compete or protect his own position. Instead, he loved David as himself and made a covenant with him. He gave David his robe, tunic, sword, bow and belt - symbols of his own status and privilege (v1-4).
Jonathan’s love and friendship was further tested when Saul sought David’s life. He defended David, confronted his father and risked his own safety for his friend (1 Sam. 19:1-7; 20:30-34). Later, he strengthened David in the Lord and openly acknowledged that David would become king (1 Sam. 23:16-18).
Christ, whose self-giving love is the fullest expression of God’s generous heart, did not cling to His rights or status but humbled Himself and gave Himself for us (Phil. 2:5-8). His love frees us from the need to compete, compare or grasp.
Pause and Ponder
Where does comparison hinder me from celebrating a friend’s success?
Whose calling do I need to honour rather than resent?
How can Christ’s self-giving love shape my response to another’s success?
When we trust God’s generous heart, we can celebrate another’s calling without fearing that we have been overlooked.
Lord, free me from comparison and self-interest and give me a generous heart that celebrates, honours and strengthens others without resentment. Amen.
