Audio - When Christ Rules My Anger

Anger can rise when we feel frustrated, rejected, misunderstood or unfairly treated. We may not control when it rises, but we can choose how we respond.

“He looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts.” (Mark 3:5)

Jesus’ anger flowed from love, not wounded pride. He confronted hypocrisy and grieved over hardened hearts, yet love, compassion and mercy remained His dominant posture (Matthew 21:12–13). Even when mocked and crucified, He did not retaliate but “committed Himself to Him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 2:23).

When Jesus prayed “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34), He showed us that surrendering anger does not mean becoming passive or pretending wrong is right. It means refusing to let anger rule us. Christ calls us beyond merely managing our anger to surrendering our hearts to His lordship, until His love shapes our responses and anger no longer controls us.

The fruit of the Spirit includes gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). These are not qualities we manufacture by sheer determination. They are evidence of Christ's transforming presence within us.

Pause and Ponder

  • When anger rises in me, what usually takes control - my hurt, my pride, my need to be right, or Christ?

  • Which response of Jesus do I most need to learn: His compassion, restraint, forgiveness or trust in the Father?

  • What anger do I need to place afresh under the lordship of Christ today?

As we conclude this week on anger, may we remember that transformation comes not through greater self-control alone, but through deeper surrender to Christ.

Lord Jesus, rule my heart when anger rises. Teach me to respond with love, forgive without denying wrong, and trust You with what I cannot control. Shape me by Your Spirit to reflect Your gentleness and self-control. Amen.
