Audio - When Peace Matters More Than Winning

Sometimes the hardest part of conflict is not figuring who is right. It is being willing to let go of our right to win.

“Please let there be no strife between you and me… for we are brethren.” (Genesis 13:8)

The Bible says in Genesis 13 that strife arose between the herdsmen of Abraham and Lot because their households and herds had grown so large that the land could no longer sustain them. Abraham could have asserted his position and age and claimed the better portion. Instead, he took the initiative to preserve their relationship and went a step further by giving Lot the first choice.

Lot chose the Jordan Valley, the land that appeared to be better. Abraham accepted what remained without complaint reflecting his trust in God. He realised that his giving up his right to choose did not mean giving up on God’s promises or plans.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9). Paul urges us to “pursue the things which make for peace” (Romans 14:19).

Peacemaking doesn’t mean ignoring truth or wrongdoing, but requires the trust to surrender. To surrender the right to the last word and the need to prove ourselves. Peacemakers choose relationships over recognition, and honouring God over winning.

Pause and Ponder

  • Where am I choosing winning over peace?

  • What do I need to release to God?

  • Can I let go and trust God with the outcome?

May we be people who choose peace, trusting God enough to surrender what we hold on to and discover that His peace is greater than anything we could gain by winning.

Lord, give me humility to release my rights, wisdom to pursue peace, and faith to know that I will not lose when I honour You. Amen.
