Audio - Peacemaking Takes the First Step

“Let them make the first move.” How often do we hold back, convinced they should apologise first or fearing that reaching out might make things worse?

“I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.” (Genesis 33:10)

Jacob had every reason to be afraid of Esau. The Bible in Genesis  27 relates the account of Jacob’s deception when he stole his brother’s blessing and fled for his life. Now, as he returned home, he learned that Esau was coming toward him with four hundred men.

Jacob was terrified. But he didn't turn around. Instead, he prayed. He prepared. He sent gifts ahead. And then he moved toward his brother, bowing seven times as he approached. Jacob could not know how Esau would respond. He could only choose what he would do. When Jacob finally met Esau, God had prepared the way. Esau embraced him, and what Jacob had feared became an unexpected moment of reconciliation.

We cannot control the other person’s response, but we can take the first step towards peace - an apology, a conversation or simply asking, “Can we talk?” As Paul reminds us, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

Pause and Ponder

  • Is fear, pride or hurt keeping me from taking a step toward peace?

  • What is one step toward peace that is within my control?

  • Am I willing to trust God with the response I cannot control?

Peacemaking can sometimes mean taking the first step in obedience to God, trusting Him with the outcome.

Lord, give me courage to take the first step towards peace, freedom from fear and pride, wisdom to know how to respond, and faith to trust You with the outcome. Amen.
