Audio - Peacemaking When We Cannot Agree

We often picture peacemaking as reaching agreement and moving forward together. But what happens when sincere believers disagree?

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

The Bible in Acts 15 tells us about the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas. They strongly disagreed about whether John Mark should accompany them on their next missionary journey. While Barnabas wanted to give Mark another opportunity, Paul was unwilling. Neither was prepared to change his position, and eventually they went their separate ways (v 36-41). Paul and Barnabas’s separation did not end God’s work; they went on with two teams instead of one. In time, Paul spoke positively of Barnabas and welcomed Mark, declaring, “He is useful to me in the ministry” (2 Timothy 4:11). Even mature believers can disagree.

Peacemaking doesn’t always require agreement. We can disagree without disrespect, allow space without bitterness, and leave room for God to change hearts - including our own. Reconciliation may take time, but we can release the outcome to God and choose grace over resentment. Because we belong to Christ, our differences need not divide us.

As we clothe ourselves with love, may Christ’s peace rule our hearts and guide us in handling our differences with grace, keeping us united even when we cannot agree (Colossians 3:14–15).

Pause and Ponder

  • Do I assume someone must be wrong when we disagree?

  • Can I disagree and still respond with love?

  • What relationship do I need to entrust to God?

Peacemaking sometimes means parting without bitterness, and leaving room for God’s grace.

Lord, help me disagree with humility, honour others with love, and trust You when we cannot agree. Keep my heart free from bitterness. Amen.
