Audio - Surrender Before Service

We often think of service as doing something for God - teaching, helping, giving or leading. But what if service began long before we did anything?

“Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)

The Bible in Isaiah 6 records Isaiah’s famous vision of God’s holiness and his response to God’s call. However, before God calls Isaiah to service, He begins by giving him a glimpse of His holiness, causing him to experience a deep, personal, overwhelming realisation of his own sinfulness (v1-5) and subsequent cleansing. It is from that profound encounter that Isaiah responds with a surrendered heart. Before carrying God’s message, Isaiah must first be cleansed by God.

True service begins not with our abilities or qualifications, but with recognising God’s holiness and our need for His grace. Comparing ourselves with others can leave us feeling superior or inadequate. Instead, we come to Him in repentance, receive His cleansing and then make ourselves available.

In Christ, we see surrendered service modelled perfectly. Paul urges us to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1), surrendering not just what we do, but who we are to Him.

Pause and Ponder

  • Have I allowed God to search and cleanse my heart before focusing on what I can do for Him?

  • Am I measuring my suitability for service against others, or responding to God’s grace?

  • Where might God be inviting me to say, “Here I am. Send me”?

As Paul urges us, may we present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God as our true worship (Romans 12:1).

Lord, may I live in constant awareness of Your holiness, cleanse my heart and make me willing to serve wherever You lead. May my life be an offering of worship to You. Amen.
