Service – Service That Strengthens Others (365/255)

Behind every visible ministry are people who give, encourage, organise and support, often without receiving much recognition.
“For indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also” (Romans 16:2)
As Paul concludes his letter, he begins Romans 16 with a commendation of Phoebe, describing her as a servant of the church in Cenchreae. He asks the believers to welcome her in a manner worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she needs (v1-2). Though Scripture gives few details of Phoebe’s service, Paul’s words affirms that her service had made a difference to many lives.
Phoebe reminds us that service takes many forms - from caring for the vulnerable to offering resources, hospitality and practical support and is not limited to standing at the front or leading a ministry. When we use what God has given us to strengthen others, even behind the scenes, we become partners in His work. Service means not only doing God’s work, but also strengthening and encouraging others in theirs.
Jesus Himself came not to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). Having received His love, we reflect it by using what He has blessed us with to strengthen others, in seen and unseen ways. We point others to Christ when we serve with His humility and love.
Pause and Ponder
How am I using my gifts, resources and influence to strengthen others in God's work?
Whose service could I encourage or support in a practical way?
Am I willing to serve faithfully even when my contribution goes unnoticed?
May we use what Christ has entrusted to us to strengthen others and advance His work, even in ways unseen.

Lord, teach me to give generously, serve faithfully and recognise the contributions of those around me, helping others fulfil Your calling for them. Amen.
