Discernment – Seeing with God’s Eyes (365/23)

We often evaluate life the way we evaluate people—by what looks impressive, capable, or safe. But God’s discernment works differently. What seems strong to us may not be what sustains His purpose. Godly discernment trains us to respond from God’s perspective.
When God sent Samuel to anoint Israel’s next king, Samuel instinctively looked for stature and presence. But the Lord corrected him: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, NKJV). Each of Jesse’s sons were declined by God, until the overlooked shepherd was called in from the fields. When David entered, the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” (1 Samuel 16:12, NKJV). David was not chosen because he looked ready, but because his heart was already aligned with God.
Scripture reminds us that Christ is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24, NKJV). As we walk with Him, He reshapes how we see, training our hearts to value what lasts, not what merely shines. In a noisy world, discernment invites us to pause, listen, and trust God’s view over our instincts. We often measure situations by visibility, speed, success, or approval, but God measures our hearts by faithfulness, humility, and surrender.
Pause and Ponder
What does this passage show me about how God sees people?
Where am I relying on appearance, speed, or approval instead of God’s truth today?
Whom can I help point to Jesus as the true source of wisdom?
As we walk with Jesus, He shapes our hearts and sharpens our discernment, keeping us unshaken in every season.

Lord Jesus, guard my heart from outward judgments and train my spirit in Your wisdom. Help me walk in discernment, anchored in You alone. Amen.
