Surrender – Surrender is Costly (365/63)

True surrender to Christ sometimes carries a cost. Following Jesus is not always about comfort, success, or safety—it is about trusting Him even when obedience leads through suffering.
Stephen’s story in Acts chapter seven reveals the heart of surrender under persecution. As he was being stoned, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit… Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” (v59-60). Even in death, Stephen trusted Christ with his life and chose forgiveness over bitterness. Stephen’s life and death were not separate stories. He lived in full dependence on God, filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking truth faithfully, and loving even those who opposed him. He reflected the same dependence on the Holy Spirit and surrendered unto death.
Persecution did not create Stephen’s faith—it revealed it. In his final moments, Stephen echoed the heart of Christ. Just as Jesus prayed for His persecutors on the cross, Stephen interceded for those who killed him. Stephen’s death is described as falling asleep, a gentle picture of a believer who trusted God beyond this life.
Jesus is the ultimate model of costly surrender who endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2), trusting the Father’s redemptive purpose even through suffering.
Pause and Ponder
What does Stephen’s life reveal about trusting Christ when following Him becomes costly?
Are there areas where fear of suffering or rejection keeps you from obeying God fully?
Whom might God be calling you to forgive or pray for, even if they have caused you pain?
May we grow in humble surrender to Christ as we love people as He calls us, even when the cost is high.

Lord Jesus, give me a heart that forgives, loves, and remains faithful under pressure in humble surrender to You. Amen.
