Audio - Service That Perseveres

What is our response when criticism, opposition or difficulties arise in our service - give up or persevere?

“The God of heaven Himself will prosper us.” (Nehemiah 2:20)

The biblical account of Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls reminds us to persevere in God-given service. Deeply moved by the reports of the city’s broken walls and ruined gates, Nehemiah takes decisive action. He spurred the people to rebuild, reminding them of God’s favour and the king’s support. They respond “Let us rise up and build” (Nehemiah 2:17–18). However, the enthusiastic work of rebuilding was soon met with opposition, from the likes of Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem, who mock their efforts and question their intentions. Nehemiah refused to allow their ridicule to determine the outcome. As the opposition intensified, his combat strategy was prayer with practical action. (Nehemiah 4:6–9). Focused on his God-given mission, Nehemiah refused to be distracted, declaring, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3).

As we serve God, we may face criticism, discouragement and unexpected challenges. Perseverance means remaining faithful to His purposes, seeking His wisdom and adapting when necessary. Jesus Himself endured the cross, fixing His eyes on the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2–3).

Pause and Ponder

  • What difficulties or distractions are making it hard for me to serve faithfully?

  • Am I responding to challenges with prayer and wisdom, or allowing them to discourage me?

  • What can I do today to remain faithful to the work God has entrusted to me?

As we follow Christ’s example, may we persevere in service, trusting God even when the path is difficult and the results are unseen.

Lord, grant me wisdom, courage and perseverance to serve faithfully, keeping my eyes fixed on Your purposes and trusting You with the outcome. Amen.
