Audio - Sacrifice of Security

What gives you a sense of security—familiar places, familiar people, or a predictable future?

For Ruth, security lay in Moab. It was her homeland, her culture, and the place where her family lived. After the death of her husband, Ruth had every reason to remain there. Even Naomi urged her to return, hoping she might rebuild her life among her own people.

The Bible tells us that instead of returning to what was familiar, Ruth clung to Naomi and stepped into an uncertain future: Entreat me not to leave you… For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.” (Ruth 1:16, NKJV)

Ruth was not merely changing location; she was surrendering security. But her sacrifice was rooted in devotion—both to Naomi and to the Lord she had come to trust. God was already weaving His purposes through her obedience. In time, Ruth would become part of the lineage through which the Messiah would come (Matthew 1:5).

Just as Ruth left what was familiar to follow the God of Israel, Jesus left the glory of heaven to enter our broken world so that we might belong to Him.

Pause and Ponder

  • What are the familiar securities in your life that you find hardest to release to God?

  • How does Ruth’s example challenge you to trust God even when the future feels uncertain?

  • Whom might your faith-filled choices encourage to trust the Lord more deeply?

Following God often requires letting go of the security we can see in order to trust the security we have in Him.

Lord, my heart is often conflicted, clinging to things that make me feel secure. Help me to let go and willingly surrender them to You and to find my true security in You alone. Amen.

Ruth 1:6-18
