What happens when following Christ leads not to comfort, but to suffering?
The apostle Paul knew that reality well. In 2 Corinthians 11, he recounts the hardships he endured for the sake of the gospel—beatings, imprisonments, dangers from enemies, sleepless nights, hunger, and exposure. His life was marked not by ease but by sacrifice.
Yet Paul did not run away from the cost, but continued faithfully because he knew the One he was serving. Paul’s sacrifices were not occasional inconveniences; they were part of a lifetime of devotion to Christ. Through all the dangers he faced, one thing remained certain—nothing could end his life until God’s purpose for him on earth was complete.
But Paul’s burdens were not only physical. He also carried a deep, daily concern for the churches. He writes, “Besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.” (2 Corinthians 11:28, NKJV)
Paul’s heart reflected the heart of Christ. He willingly endured great suffering for the spiritual well-being of others. His life reminds us that following Christ may involve uncomfortable sacrifices—seasons of hardship, emotional burdens, and unseen labour for others. Yet none of these sacrifices are wasted in God’s hands.
Pause and Ponder
How do you usually respond when following Christ becomes uncomfortable or costly?
What does Paul’s endurance teach you about trusting God through seasons of hardship?
Who around you might need your prayer, encouragement, or care today?
A life devoted to Christ may not always be comfortable, but it will always be purposeful in God’s hands.

Lord, like Paul, give me the courage to remain faithful. Shape my heart to care for others, and help me trust that every sacrifice made for You is never in vain. Amen.
2 Corinthians 11:23-28
