Audio - The ‘Yet’ When Nothing Makes Sense

What happens when everything you rely on is taken away—when the visible signs of stability disappear one by one?

Habakkuk paints that very picture. No figs on the tree. No grapes on the vine. No crops in the field. No animals in the stalls (Habakkuk 3:17–18, NKJV). It is a complete collapse of provision and security. Yet, in the middle of this emptiness, he makes a startling choice: “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

This is not shallow optimism or forced positivity. In the earlier chapters we see that Habakkuk has wrestled honestly with God. He has questioned, lamented, and faced the reality of judgment. But through that process, something shifts. He says “yet” will I rejoice in the Lord because his confidence is no longer in what God gives, but in who God is.

At the cross, everything appeared lost. Darkness fell. Hope seemed extinguished. Yet in that very moment, Jesus secured eternal salvation. What looked like defeat became victory. Because of Him, our joy is not dependent on what we hold, but on the One who holds us.

Pause and Ponder:

  • What do I learn about God’s character here that gives me reason to rejoice, even when life feels uncertain?

  • Where is my joy tied to outcomes rather than anchored in Christ?

  • Whom can I gently point today toward the steady joy found in God, especially in their place of struggle?

Joy anchored in Christ cannot be taken away by changing circumstances. When everything else fades, Christ remains—and in Him, so does our joy.

Lord Jesus, when all else feels uncertain, fix my eyes on You. Teach me to rejoice in who You are—my salvation and my strength. Amen.
