Joy – Joy Rooted in Humility (365/95)

What fills your heart when God’s plans interrupt your own—especially when they feel overwhelming or unexpected?
When Mary received the astonishing news that she would bear the Messiah, her response was not fear or pride—but worship: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:46–47, NKJV).
This is the beginning of the Magnificat—a song overflowing with joy. Mary’s joy did not come from ease. Her path would be costly, misunderstood, and uncertain. Yet her heart was anchored in who God is. She magnified the Lord—making Him great in her thoughts, her words, and her life. Her entire being turned toward Him in awe.
What stands out is her humility. Mary knew her place in the world was small. Yet she also knew that God had seen her. Her joy was not in being chosen, but in the God who chooses—the One who is powerful, holy, and full of mercy.
The Child Mary carried would become the Saviour she rejoiced in. Through Him, we too are seen, known, and recipients of grace we do not deserve. True joy is born when we stop magnifying ourselves and begin magnifying Him.
Joy grows where humility lives.
Pause and Ponder:
What does Mary’s response teach me about God’s character and His grace toward the humble?
In what ways am I tempted to focus on myself rather than magnify the Lord?
Whom can I encourage today by pointing them to God’s goodness instead of human achievement?
When we understand that every good thing in us and through us is God’s work, our hearts overflow—not with pride, but with praise.

Lord Jesus, teach me to magnify You in every season and guard my heart from pride. Fill me with humble joy and may my life reflect Your greatness, not my own. Amen.
