Audio - When Control Replaces Trust

Sometimes unforgiveness doesn’t look like anger—it looks like control, quietly building systems of suspicion, replacing trust with calculation where relationships once had space to breathe.

The Bible in Genesis 29-31 tells of Laban. His relationship with Jacob was marked by manipulation and counter-manipulation—twenty years of shifting power, suspicion, and hidden agendas. Laban deceives Jacob into extended labour, benefits from his presence, yet never fully releases control over him (Genesis 31:7, 41). Even when confronted, he rewrites the story—claiming innocence, asserting authority, and framing himself as restrained only by God’s intervention (Genesis 31:43–53).

Unforgiveness in Laban does not explode; it becomes control, accusation, and guarded distance. He cannot release what he cannot fully trust.

Jacob, however, moves in a different direction. For years, he also operated in manipulation, but his turning point comes when God breaks his self-reliance in wrestling (Genesis 32:24–30). Changed by the divine encounter, Jacob who once grasped for advantage begins to release it. When he meets Esau, he restores the relationship, and chooses peace over payback (Genesis 33:3–11). The one who once fought for control now surrenders it.

True forgiveness always risks trust. It calls us to release our need for control and trust God to bring justice in His way and time (Romans 12:19).

Pause and Ponder

  • Where am I trying to maintain control because I do not trust restoration is possible?

  • How has past hurt shaped the way I manage relationships today?

  • What would it look like to release someone into God’s justice and God’s care?

May we be willing to forgive and refuse to let past harm define the future God is still writing.

Lord, heal what has been wounded in me so I do not build walls where You are inviting peace. Teach me to trust You with both justice and restoration. Amen.
