Audio - Compassion that Intercedes

It is often easier to desire justice than to extend mercy. We may find compassion flowing naturally toward those we love, yet struggle when God shows grace to people we think least deserve it. Compassion is tested when it confronts our pride, prejudice, and desire for control.

“So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.” Exodus 32:14 (NKJV)

Both Moses and Jonah stood before God while judgment hung over sinful people. Yet their responses could not have been more different. Moses pleaded for mercy on behalf of rebellious Israel. Though deeply grieved by their sin, he interceded for them. His heart reflected the compassion of God (Exodus 32:11-13).

Jonah resisted the very mercy he knew God would show. He did not want Nineveh to receive compassion because he believed they were unworthy of grace. He struggled with anger when God spared them (Jonah 4:1-3).

Jesus, our perfect Intercessor, does not withhold compassion from sinners. He stands in the gap for us and intercedes for us (Hebrews 7:25). Jesus delights in showing mercy to the undeserving.

When we show Christ-like compassion, we ask “How can I reflect the mercy I have received?” rather than “Do they deserve grace?”

Pause and Ponder

  • What do Moses and Jonah reveal about different responses to God’s compassion?

  • Am I resisting showing grace to someone I feel is undeserving?

  • Whom is God calling me to pray for, forgive, or show compassion toward today?

May we, like Moses and Jesus our perfect Intercessor, intercede with compassion for even those we may feel do not deserve mercy, rather than condemning them.

Lord Jesus, thank You for interceding for me with mercy and grace. Soften my heart where it has become hard, and help me reflect Your compassion in intercession. Amen.
