Audio - Compassion that Crosses the Road

Compassion is not measured by what we know or say, but by whether we are willing to act help those in need.

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.” Luke 10:33 (NKJV)

Jesus told of a man who was beaten, robbed, and left half dead on the Jericho road. A priest saw him but crossed to the other side, so did a Levite. Though both held respected religious positions, neither allowed compassion to interrupt their journey.

Then came a Samaritan, despised and rejected by the Jews, the only one moved with compassion. He treated the wounded man’s injuries, carried him to safety, cared for him personally, and willingly bore the cost of his recovery.

Jesus reminds us that compassion is active and not limited by status, comfort, race, or personal preference. Though we were broken and helpless in sin, Christ moved toward us with mercy and compassion. “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us…” (Ephesians 2:4, NKJV). Jesus did not pass us by in our need; He came to rescue and restore us.

Pause and Ponder

  • What does the Samaritan’s response reveal about the compassionate heart of Jesus?

  • Am I too busy, distracted, or self-protective to notice the needs around me?

  • Whom is God calling me to move toward with practical compassion this week?

May we reflect the heart of Christ by being willing to “cross the road” toward those in need, just as Jesus moved toward us in mercy when we could not save ourselves.

Thank You Lord for not passing me by in my brokenness. Fill my heart with Your compassion and help me move toward others with mercy, courage, and practical love. Amen.
