God’s Providence – God’s Providence in the Wilderness (365/120)

There are times when life feels painfully empty and the future frighteningly uncertain and God seems distant and silent.
Hagar knew that feeling well. Cast out into the wilderness of Beersheba with limited provisions, Hagar watched her resources disappear one by one. Rejected, exhausted, and overwhelmed with fear, she placed her son Ishmael beneath a bush and walked away, unable to bear the thought of losing her son (Genesis 21:14-16).
From a human perspective, the story appeared hopeless and over. But not with God. The Bible says that God heard the voice of the boy, called Hagar by name, comforted her and provided for her. “Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.” (Genesis 21:19) Though grief and fear may have blinded Hagar, God saw her and provided for her.
Even when life feels barren and uncertain, God remains our faithful Provider and is at work long before we recognise His hand. Jesus entered our wilderness of sin and suffering so that we would never be forsaken (2 Corinthians 5:21). And therefore, we can remain unshaken even in uncertainty, trusting and knowing that the God who sees us will also sustain and provide for us.
Pause and Ponder
What does Hagar’s story teach us about God’s character in seasons of fear and uncertainty?
Where might fear or grief be preventing you from recognizing God’s provision today?
Whom can you encourage this week who may feel forgotten or abandoned in their wilderness season?
The wilderness is not comfortable. But our God sees us and remains our faithful Provider within it.

Father, thank You that Your eyes never leave me. When fear overwhelms and the future feels uncertain, help me trust Your faithful providence. Amen.
