God’s Providence – God’s Providence in Empty Jars (365/122)

A sense of desperation and fear can grip us in situations of lack. When the cupboards are nearly empty, and the resources seem insufficient, fear may whisper that we will never survive or have enough.
During a severe famine, God sent Elijah to a poor widow in Zarephath (1 Kings 17), who was gathering sticks, likely preparing one final meal for herself and her son. Then Elijah made what seemed like an unreasonable request: that she first make bread for him. She tells him she had just enough for one final meal for herself and her son. Elijah encouraged her with the Lord’s promise: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ (1 Kings 17:14). The woman trusted God’s word and gave Elijah bread. The Bible says, throughout the famine God faithfully sustained her (v16), proving that God’s provision is never limited by human scarcity.
Jesus became the Bread of Life for a spiritually starving world. Because of Him, believers can remain unshaken, trusting that the God who sustained the widow still faithfully provides for His children today.
Pause and Ponder
Where in your life do you feel there is “not enough” right now?
What step of trust or obedience might God be asking you to take despite your fears?
Whom can you encourage today with the reminder that God faithfully provides in seasons of lack?
May we learn to trust God one day at a time, trusting His unfailing care and provision even through times of scarcity and challenge.

Father, thank You that You are the God who provides even when the jars are empty. Teach us to trust You daily and to obey You even when resources seem limited. Amen.
