Faith – When Faith Requires a Response (365/134)

Many of us are willing to listen to God's voice, sing about His greatness, and celebrate His promises, until God requires a response from us.
“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’” Isaiah 6:8
When God called Isaiah and Jonah, both men received a clear assignment. Yet their responses could not have been more different. Isaiah answered in willing obedience, Jonah boarded a ship headed in the opposite direction.
Isaiah's response came after a painful awareness of his own sinfulness, when he cried, “Woe is me, for I am undone!” (v5) Yet after God cleansed him, he offered himself willingly for God's service. His faith was expressed through obedience despite his inadequacy.
Jonah's story exposes a different struggle. He knew who God was - gracious, compassionate, and merciful. Yet when God called him to Nineveh, Jonah refused. He wanted God's mercy for himself, but not for the people of Nineveh.
The difference between Isaiah and Jonah was not information. Both knew God. The difference was obedience. Isaiah submitted to God's purposes, Jonah resisted them.
Faith is easy to admire until it demands obedience. Yet, true faith responds to God's call with obedience, even when the assignment is uncomfortable, costly, or unexpected.
Pause and Ponder
Is God prompting me to obey in an area where I have been resisting?
What excuse or fear am I using to delay obedience?
Whom might God be calling me to serve, forgive, encourage, or reach with His love?
Faith becomes visible when obedience becomes costly.

Father, forgive me for the times I have resisted Your call. Give me a willing heart that responds with obedience, even when the path is difficult. Amen.
