Audio - Faith That Acts Now

Our disobedience to God often looks like postponement. We tell ourselves we will obey later, serve later, give later, or step out in faith later. Delayed obedience is a comfortable form of disobedience.

When Nehemiah saw Jerusalem's broken walls, he did not focus on the size of the task or the opposition. Nehemiah testified to the gracious hand of God upon him and inspired the people to rebuild. In the face of opposition Nehemiah declared “The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build” (Nehemiah 2:20). His confidence rested not in the strength of the workers but in the faithfulness of God.

The exiles in Haggai's day responded differently. While God's house lay in ruins, they devoted themselves to improving their own homes and pursuing their own comfort. They insisted that the time had not yet come to rebuild God's house (Haggai 1:2). Their delay revealed hearts more concerned with personal security than God's purposes.

Nehemiah prayed, planned, and persevered. The exiles postponed and rationalized.

You and I can spend years preparing, discussing, and intending to obey God while never taking the first step. Faith requires more than vision. It requires action.

Pause and Ponder

  • Is there something God has called me to do that I have been postponing?

  • Am I allowing comfort, convenience, or fear to delay my obedience?

  • Who might be encouraged or strengthened if I stepped forward in faith and began building what God has placed before me?

Faith trusts God enough to start building, even when the task seems overwhelming and the timing seems inconvenient.

Father, forgive me for the times I have delayed obedience. Help me embrace Your priorities, and take the next step You are calling me to take. Amen.
