Audio - When Fear Meets Faith

Fear and trust often seem like opposites. We imagine that if we truly had faith, we would never feel afraid. Yet David's words tell a different story. He does not say, "I am never afraid." Instead, he says, "Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You" (Psalm 56:3). Fear was present, but it no longer ruled him.

David wrote Psalm 56 while surrounded by enemies and facing real danger. His fear was not imaginary. Yet he chose to anchor himself in the character of God. He declared, "In God I have put my trust; I will not fear" (Psalm 56:4). He could trust God because he knew his God. He knew that He is not a distant or indifferent God, unfamiliar to his struggles but a God who saw and kept count of them (Psalm 56:8).

Faith and trust are closely related, but not identical. Faith believes that God exists, while trust acts on that belief. Faith says, ‘God is faithful.’ Trust says, ‘Therefore, I will place myself in His hands.’

When the disciples trembled in fear during the storm, Jesus spoke peace to the wind and waves (Mark 4:39). Because Christ is with us, we can face every fear with Him-confidence.

Pause and Ponder

  • What fear is competing for my trust in God today?

  • How does remembering God's faithfulness strengthen my confidence in Him?

  • Whom can I encourage by sharing how God has carried me through a season of fear?

Trust does not deny the storm; it fixes its eyes on the Savior who rules over it.

Faithful Father, when fear rises within me, help me turn to You instead of being controlled by it. Help me fix my eyes on You Lord Jesus and confidently place myself in Your loving hands. Amen.
