Zeal For God – Zeal for Christ (365/195)

Our culture encourages us to build a name for ourselves - to gain followers, seek recognition, and protect our reputation. Yet the mark of genuine zeal is not how much attention we attract, but how faithfully we point others to Jesus.
"He must become greater; I must become less." (John 3:30)
John the Baptist understood that his life had but one purpose: to prepare the way for Christ. When his disciples worried that the crowds were leaving him to follow Jesus, John did not compete for influence or cling to his ministry. Instead, he rejoiced. Like the friend of the bridegroom, his joy was complete because the Bridegroom had come. John gladly stepped out of the spotlight so that Christ alone would be seen.
Herod Antipas provides a sobering contrast. Fearing the opinions of his guests more than the fear of God, he ordered John's execution to protect his reputation.
One man surrendered his influence to honor Christ; the other sacrificed righteousness to preserve his own honor.
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, willingly emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–11). Because Christ humbled Himself, God highly exalted Him. As His followers, the Spirit teaches us the same joyful surrender: that Christ may increase in our lives while we gladly decrease.
Pause and Ponder
Is my desire to serve Christ shaped more by His glory or by my own recognition?
What areas of my life need to decrease so that Christ may increase?
How can I intentionally point others to Jesus rather than to myself?
Wholehearted zeal finds its greatest joy not in being noticed, but in making Christ known.

Father, fill my heart with love for Christ that gladly surrenders my pride, ambition, and desire for recognition, that He alone may be exalted. Amen.
