Audio - Godly Friendship Pursues Restoration

When two loved ones are in conflict, what do you do - choose a side, defend the person you know best, or simply stay out of it?

“If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me.” (Philemon 17)

The Bible tells us in Philemon of the broken relationship between Onesimus and Philemon. Onesimus had fled, leaving a situation that needed reconciliation. Paul could have commanded Philemon to receive him, but instead he appealed in love (Philem. 8–9).

Paul did not ignore the wrong but sought a way for both truth and relationship to be restored. He urged Philemon to receive Onesimus not as a slave but as a beloved brother in Christ (Philem. 11, 16). He was even willing to bear the cost of reconciliation, telling Philemon, “put that on my account” (Philem. 18).

We were separated from God by sin, yet Jesus did not simply condemn us from a distance. He stepped into our brokenness and bore the cost Himself. At the cross, Jesus cancelled the debt of our sin and made reconciliation with God possible (Col. 2:13–14; 2 Cor. 5:18–19).

Faithful friendship, even amid conflict, appeals in love, pursues truth and restoration, and is willing to bear the cost.

Pause and Ponder

  • Where is God asking me to be a bridge rather than a judge?

  • Am I seeking to prove who is right or pursue restoration?

  • What cost am I willing to bear for reconciliation?

As we follow Christ, may we be faithful friends who do not simply take sides in broken relationships but help make way for grace to rebuild what has been damaged.

Lord, help me to respond to broken relationships with wisdom, courage and love and willingly build bridges where I can, ever pointing others to Christ. Amen.
