Audio - Service That Flows from His Presence

Do we sometimes become so occupied doing things for God that we forget to spend time with Him?

“Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)

In Luke 10, when Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary, Martha busies herself with the preparations, while Mary sits at the Lord’s feet, listening to His words. Frustrated that her sister has left her to do the work alone, Martha asks Jesus to intervene. But Jesus gently points to her deeper struggle: her worry about many things, while Mary has chosen what is needed (v38-42). Jesus is not condemning Martha’s desire to serve. Hospitality matters, and practical needs must be met. He is drawing attention to what happens when our activities overwhelm us and distract us from the One we seek to serve.

As we serve, may we guard against busyness that draws us away from Jesus, remembering that our worth rests not in our accomplishments but in our relationship with Him. Jesus Himself regularly withdrew to quiet places to pray (Mark 1:35). If the Son of God made time for communion with the Father, how much more do we need to make space to listen to Him?

Pause and Ponder

  • Has my service become so busy that I am neglecting time with Jesus?

  • What is driving my service - love for Christ, a sense of duty or the need to meet others' expectations?

  • What can I set aside today to make more room to listen to the Lord?

The question is not how busy we are serving Jesus, but rather how closely we are walking with Him.

Lord Jesus, draw me back to Your presence when I become distracted by many things and  teach me to serve from a heart rooted in You. Amen.
