Audio - Service That Reflects Christ

We often measure greatness by influence, leadership and recognition, admiring those who stand out and accomplish remarkable things.

“I have given you an example that you should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15)

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus rose from the table, took a towel and washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17). Knowing who He was, He chose to serve, calling His disciples to follow His example. He humbled Himself even to death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–8), showing us that true greatness is expressed through self-giving love. Jesus makes it clear that service is not a way to gain status or prove our worth. It is the natural expression of a life shaped by His love. As He tells His disciples, people will recognise them by their love for one another (John 13:34-35).

We may never be asked to wash someone's feet, but we will have opportunities to take the lower place, to do the unnoticed task, help someone who cannot repay us, listen when we would rather speak, or put another person's needs before our own convenience. Such acts may not earn recognition, but they reflect the heart of our Saviour. Even the simplest act of service becomes an expression of Christ’s love.

Pause and Ponder

  • Do I associate greatness with recognition, or with the willingness to serve?

  • Is there an unnoticed or inconvenient task I am reluctant to do?

  • How can I reflect Christ's humility and sacrificial love in my relationships today?

May we serve with humility and love, reflecting Christ who gave Himself for us, rather than seeking recognition.

Lord Jesus, may my life reflect Your heart as I serve with surrender, compassion and humility wherever You call me. Amen.
