Audio - Generosity That Notices

Have you ever been so caught up in your day that you failed to notice someone who needed your help?

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.’” (Luke 10:30)

In response to the question, ‘Who is my neighbour?’ Jesus, in Luke 10, tells a parable in which the hero was someone no one in the audience would have expected. While a priest and a Levite saw a wounded man lying on the road and passed by on the other side, a Samaritan stopped. Whatever their reasons, the priest and the Levite saw suffering but did nothing. The Samaritan, however, stopped and chose to act. Moved with compassion, he bandaged the man's wounds, took him to an inn, and paid for his care.

A Samaritan, despised by many Jews, demonstrated the love that pious and influential religious leaders did not. He did not ask about the wounded man’s community, beliefs, or ability to repay him. He simply responded with compassion and generosity to the need before him.

Jesus calls us to a love that crosses boundaries, as He demonstrated by giving Himself for us (Romans 5:8). Having received His grace, we extend His love through practical acts of compassion (1 John 3:18).

Pause and Ponder

  1. Whose needs might you be overlooking because you are too busy?

  2. Are there people you find it difficult to help because they are different from you?

  3. What practical act of generosity can you offer someone today?

Generosity begins when we let another’s need interrupt our plans - by sharing what we have, offering our time, or giving practical help.

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to those in need and my heart to respond with Your compassion. Amen.
