Generosity – Generosity Begins with Surrender (365/270)

Can you recall a time when you wanted to give, but hesitated because you realised what it would cost you?
“...in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.” (2 Corinthians 8:2)
In his letter to the Corinthian church, Paul makes an example of the Macedonian churches. He explains how these churches were going through great affliction and deep poverty. They had every reason to hold on to what little they possessed. But they chose to give generously and joyfully, giving beyond their means. Giving themselves first to the Lord and then to others, their generosity began with surrender. Rather than calculating what they could spare, they gave knowing that all that they had belonged to the Lord. Their generosity was determined not by their circumstances but by their experience of God's grace.
Our Lord Jesus, though rich, for our sake became poor, so that through Him we might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). He did not give in part; He gave Himself completely for us. When we understand the immeasurable generosity of Christ, giving becomes a joyful response to His grace rather than an obligation to fulfill.
Generosity could cost us money, time, comfort, or the willingness to put someone else's needs before our own. This does not mean giving under pressure or neglecting our responsibilities. God delights in willing, cheerful giving, not reluctant sacrifice.
Pause and Ponder
What makes you reluctant to give when generosity requires sacrifice?
Have you surrendered your resources and abilities to God?
How can Christ's example inspire you to give more joyfully?
May we with surrendered hearts, give generously, trusting in the grace we have received in Christ.

Lord, may my giving reflect Your generosity and my surrendered heart. Amen.
