Discernment – Hearing God in the Stillness (365/24)

Life often trains us to look for God in the dramatic—answers that arrive loudly, quickly, and unmistakably. Yet some of our deepest discernment is formed not in noise, but in quiet, attentive moments with Him.
After Elijah’s great victory on Mount Carmel, fear overtook him. He ran, exhausted and discouraged, into the wilderness. There, the Lord invited him to stand on the mountain. Scripture tells us, “but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. ” (1 Kings 19:11-13, NKJV).
Elijah recognized God’s presence not in the dramatic signs but in the gentle whisper. His response - he covered his face in reverence, humbling himself before the Lord. True encounter with God produces quiet awe, surrender, and honest dependence.
We often look for God in urgency, pressure, and strong emotion. But Jesus’ call, “Come to Me,” (Matthew 11:28) reveals divine authority and grace, inviting us away from self-reliance, to trust and rest in Him alone.
Pause and Ponder.
What does God’s gentle whisper in Elijah’s story reveal about Him?
Where am I reacting from fear or hurry instead of listening for Jesus’ voice?
Whom can I gently invite this week to come and find rest in Jesus?
God still speaks in quiet places. Discernment in daily life means pausing before reacting, opening Scripture before speaking, and praying before deciding.

Lord Jesus, help me recognize Your voice above fear and noise and teach me to pause and listen for Your gentle whisper. Amen.
