Audio - Obedience that Crosses Boundaries

Do you place limits on your obedience to God? Are there situations, people, or cultural expectations that quietly shape how far you are willing to go?

In Acts 10, Peter faced a moment that challenged everything he had known as a devout Jew. For generations, Jewish believers followed strict dietary laws and avoided close association with Gentiles. Yet the Lord was about to expand Peter’s understanding of His mission.

While praying, Peter saw a vision of a sheet filled with animals—many of which were considered unclean. A voice told him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” Peter’s immediate response revealed his struggle: “Not so, Lord!” (Acts 10:13–14). God repeated the vision three times to emphasize its importance. Peter did not fully understand, but he sensed that God was teaching him something deeper.

Soon, messengers arrived from Cornelius, a Roman centurion and a God-fearing Gentile who had been instructed by God to send for Peter. For Peter, entering the home of a Gentile crossed strong cultural and religious boundaries. Yet he obeyed. When Peter finally stood in Cornelius’s house, he realized what God had been showing him all along: “God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). Peter’s obedience led to the gospel reaching those once considered outsiders.

Jesus Himself crossed the greatest boundary—leaving heaven to enter our broken world so that all people might be reconciled to God. Because of Christ, the good news is for every nation, culture, and person.

Pause and Ponder

  1. Are there people or situations where you hesitate to obey God’s leading?

  2. What fears or assumptions might God be asking you to surrender?

  3. Who might God want to reach through your willingness to step beyond your comfort?

God’s mission often begins where our comfort ends.

Lord, when fear rises in my heart, give me courage to obey You, knowing that You are at work in ways I cannot see. Amen.
