Audio - Generosity Secure In Him

Have you ever felt disappointed when you did something thoughtful for someone, and nobody noticed or thanked you?

“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 6:1)

In Matthew 6, Jesus challenges His disciples to examine the motive behind their giving. He cautions them against being like hypocrites who sound the trumpet when they do a charitable deed, seeking man’s applause. Instead we are to “keep the thing so secret that even you yourself are hardly aware that you are doing anything at all praiseworthy. Let God be present, and you will have enough of an audience.” (Spurgeon). Jesus reminds His listeners it is much better to receive our return from God who gives more generously and more openly than men do. He is not saying that our good deeds must always remain hidden, but teaching that human recognition should not be our motive. Whether others notice or not, our Father sees what is done in sincerity.

Christ gave Himself for us as a sacrifice to the Father (Ephesians 5:2), not to gain human applause. We who have received His grace, can serve without constantly needing affirmation. We are already loved by the One whose approval matters most.

Pause and Ponder

  1. How do you feel when your acts of kindness go unnoticed?

  2. Have you ever given or served partly to gain recognition?

  3. What would change if you focused on pleasing Christ rather than impressing people?

Hearts secure in Christ give freely, without seeking recognition or return, even when no one is watching.

Lord Jesus, purify my motives and anchor my heart in You, that I may give out of love for You, not for human recognition. Amen.
